there are no rules so I can post when I want. I want to read more of you??? huh??? blushes
the medication is a bit more helpful.
here's an entire review of the first season of ojamajo doremi:
I think it was a very good show it has a very large sense of humanity, in which I mean, empathy
the yada episode was especially impressive in this, where he could be a stereotypical rude and uncaring boy in class that most people would write off, but seki-sensei was so understanding of yada that she let him hit her
the episodes with aiko were also of a similar top class, especially back then, I don't imagine they'd have many divorced kids in that era, at least from my experience, there are less divorces back then. imagine being a divorced kid and being so understood by a show! where you miss your mother, the "ugly" feelings of wanting to possess your mother and have her life revolve around you, your father being a dumbass but still trying to comprimise, etc it's all very real
a lot of one-off episodes about one-off characeters, some were weaker than the others, but it did make feel the world pretty lived in, and gave the showrunners an ability to showcase a lot of dynamics people will encounter, people of all ages will be stubborn, nervous, try to fight, and the battlefield is the most mundane of situations of every day
this is why I also really like the magic in itself being so mundane, they only nudge things a little, or remove a bad card, the magic is actually never big of a deal, and sometimes their actions and attitude along with the magic is what honestly did it the music and direction also helps this "lowkey" or "mundane" feeling a lot. that one jazzy track being iconic. many scenes of sunset and walking back home from school. shots that linger. low budget forcing them to also keep movement restrained and value their shots more, pushing expressive keyframes. for its budget it looks really really good. I noticed many animation errors especially towards the end, so it seems to me that they were rushed and tried their best (well it's toei...). their best was very good☆ the core friendgroup is very good. I love doremi. fun idiot with her quirks who can't think a bad thought about others if her life depended on it. hadzuki being more shy because of her upbringing, but despite the "high-class upbringing" actually being a very silly doofus who laughs at shitty jokes and is weak to people looking cool. AIKO THE BEST. ORIGINAL NANIWA INTONATIONNNN!!! she kinda wrangles the others and puts some sense into them (especially doremi) but I really like a fighter. she just wants to have fun...
onpu. onpu was a great addition. the question is very simple, what if a kid had access to magic and didn't do the best thing like the main trio? her being kinda haughty and disconnected from other kids by being a star helped a lot in selling this. but as the show goes on, you find out more that onpu has soft spots, that she also had it rough, especially with her father. her being mean was a nice change of pace and was very entertaining to watch. her gradual realization that she can use magic for good, because at her core, it's all a facade and she's also a nice kid, was very well done. I don't feel like it was anything sudden and it came from observing the trio just being themselves. which is kinda what the show is about. the trio fucking around as friends and helping out in their city cause it's what they do. the city feels very lived in thanks to those episodes focusing on the class or parents, so at the final episode I cared a lot about everyone there. pop.
ok honestly, the addition of pop to the witches was kinda whatever and was mostly there to solve "who takes care of the maho-dou". but pop episodes are few and far in between, so it never overstays its welcome. and pop is a funny character. the show is pretty funny. I never felt that a joke didn't land, even if the episode was kinda meh. the expressiveness of the show and the clever writing just made it all flow natural and I don't feel like I watched any episode while bored or something. and when a joke lands it indeed lands, doremi you CHUD!!!
majo rika and lala are kinda lowkey characters but, they are both very caring to the kids, and majo rika viewing them as her daughters by the end was actually really emotional. she isn't the type to carry her feelings on her sleeve, but the kids do still read her, and their love felt mutual and real by the end. lala exists as a voice to help majo rika be more honest or wrangle her, and her being around is always fun, especially as their plans backfire and they get btfo. idk they aren't WOW AMAZING characters, but this isn't a WOW AMAZING show, it's a lowkey show. it's about living. you probably know a majo rika and a lala. I know a majo rika (looks at muha). and it feels like living. I'm very happy some kids watched this, and saw such an empathetic show that was deeply relatable to daily life despite all of the magic coating. kids don't need to be talked down to, just show them doremi being an empathetic dumbass. I love shows that don't talk down... mnehehehhehehehehehehhe
at the end of the day, magic and miracles are mundane, and that's what the show is about. being kind to a stranger feels like a miracle to the stranger, but not in an earth shattering way. it's like, wow, people are people, and some people will understand that empathy is the opposite of weakness, and do the sometimes difficult effort to help out someone, even if there is no reward. not because they want to be righteous, but because they are a dumbass that can't help it, like doremi and crew!!! the final episode ends on a very final note, as they probably expected the show to end at season 1, and I would say it's very good, althought bittersweet, closure. all of the kids had simple dreams that could be resolved without magic, and thus giving up magic to save onpu, that they gradually have been able to see as a friend when she starting dropping her facade, was ultimately not that big of a deal, but it separated them from other friends, like dodo, rere and mimi, majo rika and lala. saving onpu's life was a worthy sacrifice, and sometimes in life you separate with friends. it's just how it is, even if it's sad. but the ending does make you think, "I do hope they see majo rika again", and that sets a very nice stage for season 2 I think. great show.
I do wish every kid having their own instrument had more emphasis, though
aiko is the only one who got proper development, for a show so much themed about music, it kinda lacks music!!!
